Indie game used to be viewed as cheap games with interesting ideas, but with the help of Kickstarter, it’s become viewed as a way of not letting a publisher get in the way of the designer’s vision. It has several strong film/book influences, but the story is entirely fictional. There is no real-life story that it’s based off of. Hotline Miami has since become a cult video game. At release, the game received critical acclaim, with praise regarding its narrative, themes, music and gameplay.
The game itself was influenced in part by Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 neo-noir crime film Drive, as well as the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys.
